Biggest Upset at MONETA Czech Open: Jiří Veselý Gets Knocked Out

09.09.2020 20:28:25 | The Czech No. 1 Veselý did not play a good match against Alexandar Vukic of Australia. Most tennis experts took it for granted he would beat Vukic with ease. He was expected to advance to the semis like Jiří Lehečka who deservedly joined the last eight at the challenger for the first time after giving a great performance against Milojevic of Serbia. Veselý played an average first set against the Australian: he was more passive than Vukic yet still he was leading 2:0 in the tiebreak. However, then the opponent won several games in a row.

The second seeded domestic player Jiří Veselý became obviously nervous after he lost the first set and, on the other hand, Vukic started to play flawlessly. He served efficiently and accurately, hit the lines unmistakably and quickly took the lead to 4:1. He then increased the lead to 5:2 and the surprising end was coming. “It was very bad. My serve didn’t work and the balls weren’t deep enough. They were either too short or too long. I’m very disappointed, this shouldn’t have happened,” said Veselý. The Czech player had his aching right shoulder treated in the second set which, however, had no impact on the final result. “I absolutely don’t want to make any excuses for that. I was trying to find a way to get into the match all the time but nothing really worked,” Veselý said disappointingly.
