Will Jiří Veselý Become the Four-Time Prostějov Champion?

05.09.2020 12:15:06 | Czech tennis boasts three triple champions of the Prostějov Challenger: Jan Hájek, Radek Štěpánek and Jiří Veselý. It is only the last one who has a chance to overwrite the statistics and become the four-time champion. Veselý won in 2014, 2015 and 2017. He defeated Gombos of Slovakia in the final in 2014, Djere of Serbia a year later and Delbonis of Argentina in 2017.

“I wanted to win the tournament so badly. I’ve said many times that it is really a matter of the heart for me and it’s absolutely correct,“ Veselý said after the final in 2017. “Every title I've won at home means a lot to me. It really feels great to win in front of your family, friends and in a club for which I want to bring as many successes as possible.”
After his early ousting at the US Open, Veselý hopes to regain the all-important confidence at home. “I believe it will start me up, get me going and get me on the victorious wave again,” he said in New York after losing to Corentin Moutet of France in three sets in the first round. However, he participated in the this year’s second Grand Slam. “Every match is good. It’s experience. You have to keep the tournament rhythm despite the difficult Corona virus times. I believe my game is gradually getting better again and I only need to be patient. I will sure break through and start to play good tennis again,” said the Czech No. 1.
