Three Czechs on the Centre Court

04.06.2018 18:40:12 | Václav Šafránek and the third seeded Carballes Baena (76th ATP) will open tomorrow’s programme of MONETA Czech Open on the centre court. Then, Adam Pavlásek will meet the second seeded Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay who is currently No. 75 ATP but was No. 19 on 15 August 2016. Adam Pavlásek miraculously broke his bad season at the Challenger in Rome in mid-May. He won the title and qualified to the main event at Roland Garros where he played the first round. “It’s a nice change to be back in form and enjoy the feeling of winning matches again. I’ll really be very happy if I can maintain my current form,” said Pavlásek.

In the end, he was the last Czech to remain in the tournament. His journey was cut short by Diego Schwartzman of Argentina who is the 12th player in the world. “I had no service at all. It’s very difficult to play against such an opponent without service. He returned everything. He was like a motor mouse and made minimum errors,“ said Pavlásek. “Such a match makes the player realise where he is and how he’s really doing. I was looking forward to the tournament and hoped to have a chance to show my game and possibly give him a hard time. It’s a pity I couldn’t make it. On the other hand, it was great experience and a motivation to play similar players more often. Hopefully, with better results.“

The third player to show up on the Centre Court will be Jiří Veselý against Gianluca Mager of Italy. The Italian was the sixth seed in the qualification and advanced to the main event. In Paris, Jiří Veselý lost to Dušan Lajovič of Serbia in the first round. What did he say after the match? “My game is not bad, but my physical condition is not great yet,“ said Veselý who suffered from health problems in April. “I needed to play something so that I could qualify for Wimbledon. I tried hard but I didn’t have enough energy for a long match,“ said the defending champion and the three time winner of the Prostějov Challenger Jiří Veselý. “I’ve always played well in Prostějov and I believe I will play well this year too.“ The last match to be played on the Centre Court of AGROFERT Arena will see Pelly of Argentina and Gombos of Slovakia.
