Kamil Majchrzak of Poland Wins MONETA Czech Open

It was the Polish player who made the Prostějov tennis fans sad on Friday by ousting Jiří Lehečka, the big surprise of the tournament, in the Friday’s semis. What was Majchrzak’s journey for the title? He defeated Safiullin of Russia 6:4, 6:4 in the first round, Polmans of Australia 6:3, 6:2 in the second round, then another Australian Vukic in the quarterfinals, and Jiří Lehečka 4:6, 6:1, 6:2 in the semis. It was only Lehečka to whom the Polish player lost a set in the entire tournament.

Majchrzak’s victory at MONETA Czech Open can be a surprise for some. However, those who followed him closely for the entire week had to admit that his game was very confident and creative. The Polish player was very accurate, aggressive and was not afraid to attack. Andujar still showed some resistance in the tiebreak and saved three match points. He lost only the last one which landed well outside the court. Majchrzak is the US Open junior champion from 2013. Last year he advanced to the main event at the American Grand Slam as a lucky loser and reached the third round in which he lost to Dimitrov. What did he have to say about the Prostějov final?

“Pablo is a great player and I wondered whether I could stand a chance in the match. However, I was more active, kept changing the rhythm and added something extra in the first set. Unfortunately, I didn’t start the second set very well: my serve stopped working and it helped the opponent come back into the match. Pablo became more confident we started to battle real hard. I fortunately break him back quickly and we played quality tennis till the very last point. All games were very tight. I’m really happy for the victory.

He won his third title in Prostějov, of which two in the Czech Republic. “I really like it here. I first played in Prostějov ten years ago when I reach the final at a junior tournament. I’ve got great memories and I like to come back. I’m glad the tournament was held in the end and that I could participate in it. I had an injury at the beginning of the year and couldn’t practice. Ironically, the interruption of the tour helped me to recover, but I didn’t expect I would play so well,” said the champion of MONETA Czech Open Kamil Majchrzak.
