Jiøí Veselý Keeps Struggling

The best Czech player celebrated the first victory at the MONETA Czech Open tournament after coronavirus pause. However, he did not add another one. The triple Prostìjov challenger champion lost the quarter-final match against Aleksandar Vukic of Australia who is currently ranked world No. 197 in the APT.
“I made many mistakes. I couldn’t even rely on my serve and my performance lacked confidence. I lost the first set absolutely uselessly. But I have to point out that even though Vukic is ranked at around two hundred, he gave a much better performance. He had a big serve and took advantage of it when I was trying to turn the match around.”
Veselý will sure want to take some rest and cure his aching shoulder in the upcoming days. What is his next goal? He wants to succeed at Roland Garros, this year’s third Grand Slam. “My biggest goal now is to get ready for Paris. I think I’ve always played well there and I believe I can also succeed this year,” said Jiøí Veselý. What did the coach Jaroslav Navrátil have to say? “Jiøí was not perfectly confident already in the first round in which he played Ivashka of Belarus. But he eventually won the match thanks to his greater experience. His confidence seemed to have vanished in the match against Vukic. He didn’t play aggressively and his serve was not of much help either. On the other hand, the Australian scored about thirteen aces which helped him a lot at decisive moments. I also have to point out that these coronavirus times are very demanding on the players’ psyche: most of them haven’t played as many competition matches as previously which must be hard for psychical stability. Not everybody can cope with the current problems. Jiøí still has great rankings, nothing is deducted and points are only added up. I’m sure he’ll make it. He just needs to be patient and focus on practicing. Those who’ve played enough matches give a good performance and those who have not make more mistakes,” said Jaroslav Navrátil.
