Thomas Johansson and the Prostějov native Jiří Novák, the semi-finalists of Australian Open 2002, will appear on the Centre Court on Saturday, June 9, an hour before the final of MONETA Czech Open. The Swedish player won the match then and later celebrated the Grand Slam title. He beat the Czech player 7:6, 0:6, 4:6, 6:3 and 6:4.
During the match Novák himself corrected the umpire’s mistake and the fair-play gesture helped the Swede to succeed. “I was really surprised by Jiří Novák’s nice gesture and I’d like to thank him one more time. Anyway, I know that Jiří is one of the fairest players on the tour. Our matches have always been played in a friendly atmosphere which also was the case of the semis,“ said Johansson in reference to one of the important moments years ago.
