Balas: “Young players took advantage of a great opportunity“

05.06.2014 10:39:21 | Sixteen Czech players played the qualification of UniCredit Czech Open of which two players of TK AGROFERT Prostejov advanced to the main competition: Daniel Knoflicek and Michal Konecny. In the qualification finals, Knoflicek beat Staubert of Prague Sparta and Konecny defeated Estonian Ivanov. “It is important to say that a futures tournament with the prize money of USD 10 thousand is taking place at the same time in Poland. Another group of Czechs such as Safranek, Rumler, Lojda, and others are playing at that tournament,“ said Jaroslav Balas, sports director of the Czech Tennis Association.

“It was primarily players born in 1995 and 1996 who gave a great performance in Prostejov. We should pay a compliment in particular to four players: Daniel Knoflicek who qualified and gave a great performance in the first round of the main competition. David Poljak and Zdenek Kolar, both born in 1996, gained first experience on the international level in the category of adults. They also took advantage of the wild card and beat a quality Argentine couple of Arguello and Velotti in doubles. Another domestic player, Michal Konecny (1989) also qualified to the main competition. The performance of Adam Pavlasek in singles as well as in doubles with Jiri Vesely was for sure the greatest surprise. He took advantage of the wild cards and I believe that he will progress to around the 200th place in the ATP ranking at the end of this year’s season,“ Balas said. All the above players practise in the Czech Tennis Association’s facilities with the Tennis Club Prostejov.
